Ditto

While looking around at images of British maps from the 1820s for The Last Man, I came across an abbreviation I didn’t recognize, rendered as a pleasing pictogram. This was in the key to W.R. Gardner’s “Comparative Heights of the Principal Mountains and Lengths of the Principal Rivers” which is well worth exploring here.

As I wrote later, “The key puzzled me until I figured out the Ditto; a nice little symbol whose replacement (“” or “” “”) just doesn’t say it as well. Time for a revival!” Now cross-posting here to amplify that message.

Thank you!
