The Londonskaya Hotel, Odessa

The Londonskaya Hotel that straddled the top of his notepaper: he’d treated her once to pastries at its café restaurant. She remembered watching the wheeled cart take its time reaching their table. I can stare and stare at this picture, seeing clearly the “Eastern” touches and the massive Russian cast to things, and yet never stop recognizing Fifth Avenue back when the robber barons were really dug in there with their mansions taking up the miles. Those hanging door lamps (did they give green light?) wouldn’t have been out of place in that Manhattan.
