It was her usual Monday, free in accordance with her schedule at the Birobidzhan Agricultural Machinery Plant. The old rooming house dvornik who covered replacement shifts there had put her up for a steady job. They worked in different departments: Magga’s manufactured bullets, Musya’s lathe parts. The plant along with its big machines for making farm vehicles had been retooled for the war effort and ran non-stop. There were a lot of accidents. Musya kept well clear of anything in motion.
